Business Line of Credit for a New Business: How to Actually Get One
New LLCs get declined for the same three reasons every time. Fix those and an unsecured line of credit becomes realistic in weeks, not years.

A business line of credit is the most useful product a young company can hold: you draw only what you need, pay interest only on the balance, and it revolves. It is also the product new businesses are declined for most often — usually for reasons that are fixable inside a month.
The three reasons new LLCs get declined
- No separation. The business has no dedicated operating account, so underwriters cannot see business revenue distinct from personal.
- No credit file. The entity has no D-U-N-S number, no trade lines, and no reporting history.
- Thin or inconsistent deposits. Two months of statements with wide swings reads as risk, regardless of the total.
What lenders check for an unsecured business line of credit
- Personal FICO of the guarantor — 680+ opens the widest set of unsecured programs, 700+ opens the best pricing.
- Time in business — six months is the common floor for revenue-based lines; some EIN-only credit programs fund at day one on personal credit strength.
- Average monthly deposits and the number of negative days.
- Existing debt, especially open merchant cash advances, which disqualify most line products outright.
- Entity hygiene: registered agent, EIN, articles, business address and phone that verify.
Paths that work for a business under two years old
Bank-statement-only revenue lines
If you are depositing consistently, several lenders will underwrite on bank statements alone — no tax returns, no financials. Expect 6 to 12 months of statements to be requested, and expect the limit to be set at roughly 50 to 100 percent of one month of deposits.
Business credit cards and 0% stacking
For pre-revenue or very early businesses with a strong personal credit profile, unsecured business credit cards deliver real capital with a 0% introductory period, often 12 months. Structured properly across several issuers, owners regularly access $50,000 to $150,000 in usable capital. Structured badly, it wrecks the personal credit profile you will need for an SBA loan later.
Secured and asset-backed lines
A line secured by receivables, inventory or a cash deposit costs less and builds entity credit history that makes the next, unsecured line achievable.
Sequence matters. Opening the wrong product first can block the better one for 12 months. Decide the order before you apply anywhere.
A 30-day readiness plan
- Open a dedicated business checking account and route 100 percent of revenue through it.
- Register a D-U-N-S number and open two net-30 vendor accounts that report.
- Get your personal utilization under 30 percent — under 10 percent if you can — before any application.
- Stop applying randomly. Each hard inquiry lowers the approval odds of the next application.
- Then apply once, in the right order, with a complete file.
