What a Business Funding Consultant Actually Does (and What to Ask One)
A good consultant reduces the number of lenders you talk to. A bad one increases it. That is the entire difference.

The business funding market has hundreds of lenders with narrow, unpublished appetites. A business funding consultant exists to translate your file into the two or three lenders most likely to approve it at the best terms — and to keep you away from the forty who will not.
What the role actually includes
- Diagnosing which products your file qualifies for today versus in 60 days.
- Packaging: statements, financials, debt schedule and a written narrative underwriters can act on.
- Targeted submission to lenders that fund your industry, size and structure.
- Negotiating terms, and reading the covenants, prepayment language and personal guaranty clauses that determine what a deal really costs.
- Sequencing multiple products so the first one does not block the second.
How consultants get paid
Reputable brokers are paid a commission by the funding lender at close, typically 1 to 8 percent of the funded amount depending on the product. Ask directly what the commission is on the specific offer in front of you. A consultant who will not answer that question is not a consultant.
Red flag: any request for a significant upfront fee before an approval exists. Legitimate compensation arrives at funding.
Six questions to ask before you engage
- How are you compensated on this deal, and does the commission vary between the offers you are showing me?
- How many lenders will see my file, and can I approve the list before submission?
- What is the total payback and effective annual cost of each offer, not just the payment?
- What would I need to change to qualify for the next-cheaper product, and how long would that take?
- Do you place merchant cash advances, and under what circumstances would you recommend one?
- Who is my point of contact after funding?
When to skip the consultant
If you have a two-plus-year banking relationship, clean returns and strong coverage, go directly to your bank first. Consultants earn their keep on complicated files: thin history, challenged credit, existing advances, acquisitions, or an owner who needs several products sequenced correctly.
The measure of a good engagement
You should finish knowing exactly what you qualified for, what you did not, why, and what to fix. If all you received was an offer and a signature request, you were a lead, not a client.
